A Word (or 477 Words) From The Festival Director...

Welcome to the twelfth edition of the Short Sited Film Festival!

Hello there! My name is Tom Subjak and as I look around right now, I seem to be holding the position of Festival Director this year… Yup! It’s definitely me. Festival Director. Festival Director. Yikes!

I am actually looking forward to shaking a few things up for the festival during my tenure… it’s all in an effort to expand Short Sited in bold new directions for its second step into its second decade. What sort of bold directions? You’ll have to wait and see… along with me. Wheels in motion sometimes become motionless!

One direction I will mention involves [SHORT_SITED_v12.0] providing a platform in 2008 for filmmakers with an interest in the sci-fi genre to showcase their short films in competition.

Sci-fi.

Sigh. Why?

Who hasn’t asked themselves “Where will I be in 5, 10, 20, 50 years? What does the future hold?”

Simply put, the sci-fi genre at its core has an unlimited capacity to tell that story – a curiosity of what could be. It could be a beautifully written and directed futuristic metaphor for how we live in society today…  or it could be a visual FX B-grade movie extravaganza of giant mutant alien bunnies destroying our lands and monuments! The net could be cast out very wide… the discovery of where it sets is up to you.

Can you take up the challenge of producing a sci-fi short armed with a limited (or non-existent) budget and just the inner workings of your imagination? Your entry may even cross the boundaries of what we perceive sci-fi to be. It’s that exciting prospect that [SHORT_SITED_v12.0] would love to screen this coming year! Your sci-fi film will be eligible for entry in the Sci-Fi All Ages category, which will join the existing yet reformatted categories of the Local Open All Ages and the National Open All Ages.

That means there’s no need to worry for those with non sci-fi productions, we are more than looking forward to seeing a variety of your productions in drama, comedy, action, animation, experimental, documentary and whatever else you can beam up!

So scope out the website, you’ll find an entry form to download and printout. Once you do that - start mailing, filming, editing or whatever you need to do to get those entries in now! (Make sure you have something to eat though. And a beverage.)

We’re living in a fantastic digital era for filmmaking at the moment. The days of cumbersome VHS to VHS analogue editing are thankfully and rightfully over. The software and filming technology we have readily available to us has made it so much easier to dream up dreams. Let’s help each other put on a fantastic 2008 show and blow everyone out of this world.

Stay tuned into the static transmission for future announcements!
